Use this checklist to prepare contributors, submit the official form, and handle the follow-up steps that can delay aid.

Your FAFSA path

Finish all three stages. Submission is not the last step: check processing, corrections, and school requests afterward.

1.Create your own StudentAid.gov account. Every required contributor needs a separate account and signature.
2.Confirm which FAFSA school year you need and gather the school codes for every college you are considering.
3.Collect identity, tax, income, asset, and benefit information for you and any required contributors.
4.Invite contributors early. Your form cannot be processed until every required section is completed and signed.

3.Add every school you may attend so each one can prepare an aid offer after admission.
4.Review the form, confirm all contributor sections are complete, sign, and save the confirmation.

2.Check your answers, Student Aid Index, listed schools, and any correction or verification instructions.
3.Respond to college document requests by the school’s deadline. Verification is a routine accuracy check, not an accusation.
4.Compare the final aid offers from schools; the FAFSA Submission Summary is not an aid offer.
